A very special Birthday at Forgan's | Restaurant Review

Hello Again,

A few weeks ago now Sam, April and I headed down to St. Andrews to celebrate my grandma's 70th Birthday! Normally every occasion like this is spent in my Gran and Grandad's house but that also means there's a lot of dishes, so this time it was arranged in a local restaurant, Forgan's.

Forgan's is a Restaurant on the high street of St. Andrews and it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever ate in. All of a sudden you feel like you've been transported to some sort of wine country in Italy or something (It really was like an Instagrammers dream).

In the main restaurant along the side there are little private bothies, each called and designed differently, we were in the 'Living room'. It was nice as your were still in the main part of the restaurant but you had that little bit of privacy! My mum told me that years ago Forgan's used to be a butcher, the front part was the butcher shop and the main restaurant part used to be where the truck offloaded the cows and where the meat was prepared - quite cool thats it's been changed but it's still kept some of it's history in the design.

As it was a private event we had a chosen menu where we could decide what we wanted from a  few options. I didn't have a starter so I thought I would tell you about Sam's. He chose crispy haggis balls and parsnip crisps, served with neeps and potatoes  (turnips and potatoes for all the non-sottish folks) and a Ardbeg Malt Whiskey Gravy. His description, 'Beautiful'.

For my main I chose the 8oz Ribeye Steak served with Thick chips, a grilled tomato, a flat cap mushroom and some watercress. Recently when going out I've been preferring steak which is quite rare as I tend to go for chicken but I wasn't disappointed with this ribeye. The cut of meat was great, not a bit went to waste. I chose to have mine well done as that's just how I prefer my steak and it honestly was cooked perfectly. Can I also add that I love the presentation, from the chips being in their own little holder to the design on the plates! For me it's the little things.

This was not also mine but it was so beautiful I couldn't not include it, this is Sam's main, the Beef Bourguignon with fluffy pastry, roasted veg and thick chips. Such a generous portion and again the presentation is a solid 10 out of 10. He very much enjoyed this - it's also a nice twist as it was served in 'pie' form.

Desert! I went for the Isle of Arran Dairy Ice Cream, Cranachan flavour. Cranachan is a traditional desert which is normally made from a mix of whipped cream, whisky, honey and fresh raspberries with toasted oatmeal soaked overnight in some whisky. This was cracking (cracking Cranachan). It was served with fresh berries and it was gone in a matter of minutes.

Now to the Special lady herself, this is Doreen, my Grandma. For the past however many years both her and my grandad have ran a 4 star Bed and Breakfast in St Andrews. They both got up in the early hours of the morning, every morning to see to their guests, their guests who travelled from all over the world. They closed the business earlier on this year and rightfully so, they've been giving and giving for so long it's time for them to enjoy their time (and they damn well have been as their not long back from a 3 week cruise round the Mediterranean - fancy).

My Mum and Auntie organised a cake to be made for her and this is it. It's marvellous, a little tea party as Doreen is now a 'lady who lunches'. It was great to see my Grandma so happy and surrounded by everyone. I had such a great time.

A closer look at this fab cake, with cinnamon swirls, cupcakes and little triangle sandwiches. We went back to their house afterwards for tea and cake and I caught my grandma in the kitchen carefully cutting each little decoration off of the cake - she said it was too good to eat. Once everything was off and saved then and only then could we dig in, bless her.

If you find yourselves in St Andrews be sure to check out Forgan's. The staff are so welcoming and helpful, the food is amazing, the decor is superb and the atmosphere is great.

Jamie's New Super Lunch Menu | Review

Hello Again!

Today's post is one of my favourites - it's a foodie one! I was asked along to Jamie's Italian in Aberdeen to try the new Super Lunch Menu, so I grabbed Sam and we went along. I love Italian food but I had never been to Jamie's before but I had heard great things so I was very excited to give it a try!

The Super Lunch Menu is really good and affordable, you can have two courses for £10.95 or have three (like we did) for only £12.95. Some places, in Aberdeen especially, you can't even get one course for that so that's a tick straight off the bat!

As I'm getting older now (let's hide the greys) I am trying to extend my palette so for my starter I went for the Fritto Misto which was a very generous plate full of crispy sustainable fish, mussels, squid and calamari. I gave everything a try but my favourite was the sustainable fish which (I think) was cod. The garlic and lemon aioli really brought so much flavour to it. The squid was also very good but the mussels and calamari didn't appeal to me, don't get me wrong the flavours were spot on but it was just the texture for me - nothing wrong with the food!!

Sam had a Garlic bread roll with Parmesan for his starter, I loves how it was presented and that it looked like a little loaf. I also tried this (had to, for the blog obviously) and it was great - very morish!

For my Main I went for the Italian Steak and Fries and this was one of the best steaks I have ever had! As you can see it was a very lean piece of meat and it was massive. It was served with a herby garlic butter over it, some horseradish and rocket and also some very skinny fries. I made the right choice with my main - 10 out of 10!

Sam chose the Tagliatelle Bolognese for his main and it was presented beautifully. His tagliatelle was in a cone shape and it was topped with some herby breadcrumbs. There wasn't a drop of food left on his plate!

Desert, my favourite part of the meal - a part I don't normally have. Let me tell you, overtime Sam and I go out for a meal he starts off saying that he's going to leave room for pudding but after the main he always changes his mind, so I'm left not having because I don't want to sit having pudding on my own - so I told Sam that we had to have, for the blog! (That saying comes in use quite a lot).

I chose the Ultimate Chocolate Brownie and I'm so upset to say that it was a little disappointing. Yes it was on a lunch menu so I wasn't excepting anything over the top but when I got this it looked a bit mediocre. It was a chocolate brownie served with proper butterscotch sauce which was really good and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The brownie was quite dry and tasted a little burnt, it's just not what I expected when I ordered the Ultimate Chocolate Brownie.

Sam was not disappointed though, he went for the Baked White Chocolate Cheesecake. This was served with fresh raspberries and crushed amaretti. If I were to choose again, I would go for this.

Overall our meal was really good and full of flavour and I was really impressed with the staff and the design of the Restaurant, it was a nice mix of industrial and rustic.

If you liked what you saw then be sure to give the new Super lunch menu a try! The menu runs Monday to Friday, 12pm-6pm - plenty of time to grab your favourite people and enjoy a tasty meal!

Thank you to the staff at Jamie's Italian Aberdeen for your fantastic service and to the team at Jamie's for inviting us along!

A Little Catch Up | Lifestyle

Hello Again!

Long time no blog (I feel like I'm saying this too often now) I took a wee break from blogging for a few reasons but the main one is because i have just started a new job (about a month ago now) and it was just wiping me out. I've been coming home like a zombie and just going to bed but I feel like I'm getting used to it now so I thought I'd just do a little catch up post about what I've been up to since I've been away!

First of all I've been loving this quote! I feel like I am too serious about things too often so I'm trying to relax more and just to let things pan out on their own. it's so true though, you need a wish bone so you can dream (you're never too old to dream), a back bone so you can stand up for yourself and a funny bone because laughter is the best medicine!!

At the beginning of May I won tickets to go and see Breakfast at Tiffany's at His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen. I've seen the movie so many times and that's mainly because my sister loved it growing up so I took her along with me. Emily Atack played Holly and she was really good, I loved it!

Since the sun has finally made an appearance and stuck around for more than a day we've been spending a lot more time outdoors and going for walks. April's also been obsessed with bugs lately (don't ask, I didn't encourage this but it's good that she's not scared) and on this day we found a big beetle and she wanted tot make him home. Just as we were leaving him he rolled onto his back and as struggling to get back onto his feet so I saved him. April called me a Hero, it was a good day.

So that's what I've been up to obviously other than work and housework and all that fun adult things (woo) but one really exciting thing that's happening is Sam and I are going to London!! He's taking me away for my 24th Birthday. I'm so excited, there's so many things that we want to do so if you have any suggestions please let me know!

May Glossy Box | Unboxing

Hello Again,

It's been a while since I've done a Glossy Box unboxing so I thought I would show you what I got inside May's. If you want to see what I got, keep reading.

This months theme is Glossy Getaway, city breaks are now as popular as beach breaks (I actually prefer city breaks) so the team at Glossy Box decided to dedicate this months collectors edition to their favourite urban destinations. I got the green box which was, London. Which I was actually really happy with because I am going to London in July and I'm oh so excited! The four collectible boxes depict London, Paris, New York and Berlin and they were all designed by OMY Studio. (I always try to come up with good ideas of how to re-use my boxes and this months box is going to go to April so she can colour it in, I'm sure she'll love it).

Let's take a look at what products I got:

Absolute New York Velvet Lippie

"This pretty hippie glides over lips, delivering a slick of highly pigmented colour, which then sets into a plush matte finish." I got the shade Lolita, it's a very bright but pale pink, it doesn't really suit my skin tone as I'm quite pale but I think with a tan it would look nice. (by the by - it smells AMAZING).

Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser

"There's a very good reason this gentle, soap-free cleanser has a whole host of advocates, from top dermatologists to celebs such as Alexa Chung. It's suitable for any skin type and soothes and nourishes skin as it removes every once of makeup." This kind of looks like it should be contact lens solution but I'm looking forward to giving it a go!

A few months ago we were able to choose which kind of Revlon Mascara we wanted and I went for the Ultra Volume. I have really long eyelashes so lengthening mascaras don't really appeal to me but anything that helps them look fuller I am good to give it a try!

Bee Good Youth enhancing plump and firm moisturiser

"This nourishing moisturiser works to plump, smooth and soften your complexion, leaving it dewy and glowing with luminosity". This sounds great, hopefully I can tick all of those boxes!

Hawaiian Tropic Protective Dry Oil SPF 15

"Whether you're off on a city break or catching the rays during a staycation, protect your skin and prolong that sun-kissed glow with this water resistant dry oil. The bend of cocoa butter, coconut oil and vitamin C nourishes the skin, while SPF 15 offers medium protection against UVA and UVB rays." I like what this claims to do but I am really put off by the smell (it's kind of like cat pee). I don't think I will be using this as if I think it smells like this I don't want people thinking I smell of that.

That's everything I got in this months Glossy Box, I'm excited to try most of the products but a few I think I will give away to friends - You can't like everything all the time.

Have you tried any of these products before? Let me know.
